The Stewart Road Christian Ministries Center was overflowing with hundreds of mourners on Saturday,
who came to attend the funeral of Nevaeh Buchanan.
The 5-year-old girl disappeared May 24 after leaving her apartment to play with a friend in the same
complex. Just over a week later, Nevaeh’s body was discovered encased in cement near the River
Raisin. The cause of death is not yet known.
Diana Lawson, Nevaeh’s great-aunt said, “I’m just devastated.”

“I want to thank everybody who was with us through the whole ordeal,” said Nevaeh’s uncle,
Mike Buchanan. “I hope everyone continues to pray for us. We feel a lot of sadness, but at the
same time happy because of the help our family got.”
No one has been charged in connection with Nevaeh’s death, but there are several persons of
interest in the case.
Also, last week a woman was questioned about a black car that was extracted from the mud behind
bushes near the area where Nevaeh’s body was found.

Monroe -- For several days, 5-year-old Nevaeh's family and friends spoke of hope and closure.
Friday, they spoke of sadness and retribution.
A somber Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield confirmed Friday morning what many feared -- that
a small girl's body found Thursday buried near the banks of the River Raisin likely was Nevaeh
Buchanan.
While the family tried to cling to a sliver of hope that it may not be her -- autopsy results are
pending and DNA tests haven't been completed -- many turned their anger toward the unknown abductor
and murderer labeled by Crutchfield as "sick and disturbed."
"I hope and pray to God that they never rest and be able to sleep without seeing her face," said
Diana Lawson, Nevaeh's great-aunt. "That child didn't deserve that. That child didn't deserve
anything."
Funeral arrangements won't be made until the identification is official, said the girl's grandmother
and legal guardian, Sherry Buchanan. Mother Jennifer Buchanan said she was overwhelmed by several
days of uncertainty.
"I want to see her one more time no matter what," Jennifer Buchanan said. "I'm hoping that it is
completely over."
Crutchfield said the body, found just north of Dixon Road on county land had -- based on age, size
and gender -- been tentatively identified as that of Nevaeh, who went missing May 24 from her Monroe
apartment complex.
The body was sent to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office in Detroit, where an autopsy was
continuing Friday afternoon. Office investigators said pathology tests were pending and that dental
records were being researched to ensure a correct identification.
"We have to be 100 percent sure," said Albert Samuels, chief investigator with the office.
A task force of 100 local, state and federal officials have investigated more than 1,000 tips since
Nevaeh's disappearance. The focus now is on developing evidence from the burial site, said FBI
Special Agent in Charge Andrew Arena.
Crutchfield said the suspect -- he didn't rule out more than one person -- had picked the
Raisinville Township site. "They knew where they were taking her. They intentionally went there."
Evidence recovered from the rural site Thursday and Friday in Raisinville was sent to the Michigan
State Police Crime Lab in Northville.
"It was determined by their (investigators') observation that it was a possible burial site,"
Crutchfield said. "The body in appearance seemed to be in age, size and sex that of Nevaeh."
Arena said the body was found a few feet off the bank. There was some digging involved, with
concrete found over the body, he said.
Crutchfield said the task force will be focusing on the area the body was found, sending in evidence
specialists and divers to find clues. He said the body was found in an area that hadn't been
searched because investigators focused on tips that led them elsewhere.
Crutchfield would not comment on any people of interest already named and in custody, though he said
he believed the killer is still on the loose.
"That person to our knowledge is still out there in our community," Crutchfield said.
Lawson said the persons of interest questioned by the police should suffer if they had anything to
do with Nevaeh's disappearance or death.
"I can't say they did it ... but if they did, I hope they are punished," she said. "I hope they
suffer like that little girl."
Nevaeh's disappearance has affected all corners of Monroe, with pictures of the girl still hanging
in the windows of fast food joints and gas stations. Emily Lipp, 47, a grandmother, said she went
out three times searching for a girl she never knew, breaking down in tears when she heard a body
was found Thursday.
"It broke my heart," Lipp said. "It breaks the whole community's heart."

I miss you Nevaeh and i cannot stop crying and i just miss you so much. I am speechless i just cannot find the words to say. I am very devastated. May your sweet soul rest in peace and we will find justice for you. I just wished i could've saved your life. But you are in a better place with the angels, heaven. I never knew you or your family, but my heart aches for your family. You were a precious little girl and deserved to grow up and be something special. I am so sorry that somebody took you away from achieving those goals. I pray that you rest in peace little one and in God's glory. As a mother of a 3 yr old daughter, I promise to always know where she is at all times and never leave her side while she is still young & inocent. May God comfort your friends & family for thier great loss.
